Many people who are thinking about starting CrossFit in Lake Mills have the same concern:
“I’m too out of shape to start.”
In fact, that’s one of the most common things we hear when someone first reaches out to us. People often tell us they’re frustrated that they’ve gotten so out of shape and are starting to feel aches and pains they didn’t have before. A sedentary lifestyle, long hours sitting, and even trying things like walking more or using a standing desk just hasn’t been enough to help them feel better.
They want to get back into shape and feel good about themselves again.
But they’re nervous.
Many people worry that they need to get into shape before starting CrossFit. They’re concerned they won’t be able to keep up, that they’ll be the last one finishing a workout while everyone waits for them, or that they won’t be able to do some of the movements.
The truth is, these worries are incredibly common — and they’re exactly why coaching and a supportive community matter.
Who CrossFit Is Actually For
One of the biggest surprises people experience when they start CrossFit is how good it feels to move again.
After spending years feeling stiff, tired, or inactive, simply getting the body moving can be incredibly energizing. Many new members also notice how closely the coaches work with them to make sure they are moving safely and building good mechanics.
Another surprise for many beginners is the environment. CrossFit gyms are known for being welcoming and supportive communities. Instead of feeling judged, most people find themselves surrounded by people cheering them on and helping them succeed.
At our gym in Lake Mills, we see a wide range of people in our classes.
Our members range from 17 to 60 years old, including beginners, students, parents, young couples, and people who haven’t worked out in years. Some people are returning to fitness after a long break, while others are starting a structured fitness program for the first time.
The common thread is simple: people who want to improve their health and feel better.
Why Coaching Makes a Big Difference
One of the biggest reasons CrossFit works well for people getting back into shape is the coaching.
Our coaches take time to demonstrate each movement and guide the class through progressions so members can learn the movements step by step. The goal is always to help people become proficient and confident with the movements.
During the workout, coaches continue to cue and correct to make sure everyone is moving safely.
We also talk through the intended stimulus of the workout, helping members understand the strategy behind it. That means people aren’t just exercising — they’re learning how to train effectively.
Having a coach also provides something many people struggle to find when working out on their own: guidance and accountability.
When you’re working out by yourself at a regular gym, it’s easy to second guess what you’re doing or stop when things get uncomfortable. A coach is there to answer questions, help you move correctly, and encourage you to push a little further than you might think you can.
Sometimes the biggest barrier to progress is the story we tell ourselves about what we can or can’t do. A coach helps challenge that story and show you that you’re capable of more than you might believe.
How CrossFit Workouts Are Adjusted for Beginners
Another important thing to understand is that CrossFit workouts are designed to be scaled for each individual.
That means the workout can be adjusted so it is appropriate for someone just starting out or someone who has been training for years.
For beginners, we might adjust the weight, the number of repetitions, or even break a movement down into smaller parts while someone is learning it.
For example, if someone cannot do a pull-up yet — or maybe they can only do one or two — we have several options. We might reduce the number of reps, use bands to assist the movement, use a box for jumping pull-ups, or substitute ring rows to help build the necessary strength.
Another example is the wall ball shot. If someone struggles to get their hips below parallel in the squat, we might give them a target to squat to so they can learn the correct depth. We may also use a lighter ball or adjust the number of repetitions.
These adjustments allow everyone to get the same type of workout while progressing at their own pace.
What the First Few Weeks Usually Feel Like
For most beginners, the first few weeks come with some expected experiences.
There is usually some soreness as the body adapts to new movements. It also takes time to learn some of the exercises and feel comfortable with them.
But there are also many positive moments early on.
Many new members begin building confidence quickly. They enjoy the sense of accomplishment that comes from finishing a workout. They start to rediscover what it feels like to move well and challenge themselves.
Often the first improvements people notice aren’t just inside the gym.
They start seeing changes in daily life — like walking up a hill with their kids without getting winded or squatting down to play with their grandchildren more comfortably.
During this time, we also do regular check-ins with new members to make sure they’re progressing well and feeling supported. In classes, both the coaches and other members create a positive environment where people encourage each other.
What Happens When You Stick With It
After a few months of consistent training, the changes can be significant.
Members often notice they have more energy throughout the day. They begin to hold themselves differently and move with more confidence. Their bodies start to change in positive ways as they build strength and fitness.
Just as important, they develop something that lasts much longer than motivation — a strong, healthy lifestyle habit.
Fitness becomes part of their routine and part of who they are.
